Stickies
Stickies originated as an experiment to create a straightforward online sticky note wall. The goal was to offer an interface that looked appealing and felt free from unnecessary hassles—no signups, no distractions, just a quick outlet for ideas. This project emerged while brainstorming a simple solution that small teams could adopt without the overhead seen in tools like Miro, Figma, or tldraw.
Stickies is not currently deployed anywhere.
Goals
- Simplicity: Deliver a clean, attractive interface for capturing and sharing ideas. -Accessibility: Ensure the tool is free and does not require user registration.
- Usability: Enable users to quickly export their sticky note arrangements, encouraging productivity in fast-paced brainstorming sessions.
Collaboration
Collaboration was central to Stickies’ design. The project aimed to replicate the physical experience of a shared whiteboard while eliminating digital friction. By removing the need for signups, the tool was intended to foster immediate and organic collaborative sessions. This “just sticky notes” approach was designed to streamline the brainstorming experience in small teams, directly addressing the limitations of other, more complex platforms.
Under the Hood
Under the hood, Stickies leverages a modern tech stack:
- Go: For backend performance and reliability.
- React: To build a responsive, user-friendly interface.
- Yjs (via WebRTC): Enabling real-time collaboration and data synchronization.
- AppWrite: Powering an efficient backend framework that supports data storage and management.
This combination of technologies provided a robust yet simple solution for users to share ideas quickly, ensuring that the focus remained on creativity and collaboration without the overhead of traditional authentication processes or feature bloat.
